Twittering ski deals in your favorite region

March 4, 2009

Tweet Tweet!  With folks like John Stewart talking about Twitter, you know this thing has hit the main stream.  Many of you may remember the Liftopia Twitter account, which is gaining some momentum slowly in followers.  This is a great way for folks to find out about all things here at Liftopia headquarters… but what about deals in YOUR region.

I mean, it is all well and good if Liftopia has a lift ticket deal to Park City next week, but it doesn’t help you if you are interested in New York ski resorts, Michigan ski resorts, or any other place that doesn’t have easy access to ski resorts in Utah (unless you have a private jet, but something tells me if you do, you aren’t buying on Liftopia).
We wanted to come up with region-specific Liftopia Twitter accounts, so that if you only want to hear about deals in New Mexico and Quebec, you can do so.  Here is the list, and hope these help you find some more great ticket deals.

Enjoy!

Why Not Wednesdays?

January 14, 2008

Gore and Whiteface are asking skiers and riders that very question right now, and making things interesting with a $35 lift ticket every Wednesday until closing day in April. Just bring in a can or bottle of Coca-Cola with you to the slopes, and you’ll get an adult all day lift ticket for $35. If you need gear, rentals will be half off most Wednesdays as well.

Also, on January 25, Whiteface will be offering $30 lift tickets to celebrate their 50th anniversary. These deals are available at Whiteface ticket windows only.

You know at Liftopia we love our ski deals, even if they’re not through our site. If you guys know of any other great promos going on at any resorts, definitely let us know and we’ll do our best to share them with other skiers and riders who want to enjoy more days on the slopes.

New Documentary on Big Mountain Skiing – STEEP

December 3, 2007

Vodpod videos no longer available. from thelodge.liftopia.co

On December 21st, Sony Pictures Classics (the people that brought you “Riding Giants” and “Dogtown and Z-boys”) is releasing a feature documentary on the history of big mountain skiing.

We had the good fortune to check out an advance copy, and it looks sick. It’s not like your typical ski film, all action and music. This movie really tries to take you inside the mind and psychological makeup of big mountain skiers, from pioneers like Bill Briggs and Doug Coombs to modern day innovators like Shane McConkey and Ingrid Backstrom.

Keep an eye out right here on this blog for EXCLUSIVE interviews with the director, Mark Obenhause, and several of the skiers from the film. If you have questions you’d like us to ask, let us know by putting them up in the comments.

Here is the official blurb:

“STEEP is a feature documentary about bold adventure, exquisite athleticism and the pursuit of a perfect moment on skis. It is the story of big mountain skiing, a sport that barely existed 35 years ago.

It started in the 1970s in the mountains above Chamonix, France, where skiers began to attempt ski descents so extreme that they appeared almost suicidal. Men like Anselme Baud and Patrick Vallencant were inspired by the challenge of skiing where no one thought to ski before. Now, two generations later, some of the world’s greatest skiers pursue a sport where the prize is not winning, but simply experiencing the exhilaration of skiing and exploring big, wild, remote mountains.

STEEP features many of the sport’s greatest athletes including Bill Briggs, Stefano De Benedetti, Eric Pehota, Glen Plake, Shane McConkey, Seth Morrison, Chris Davenport, Ingrid Backstrom and Andrew McLean.

The man who is often described as the greatest big mountain skier of all, the late Doug Coombs, is the character at the center of STEEP. He died in a skiing accident in La Grave, France, in April, 2006, just days after being filmed for STEEP. His rich life and tragic death reveal the essential question at the heart of big mountain skiing: How does a skier weigh the risks versus the rewards of a sport where the possibility of dying is ever-present?”
