Liftopia is working with our friends over at Marine Layer (a brand new company that makes awesome fitting t-shirts) to design a new long sleeve t-shirt for Liftopia.  We have narrowed our field of designs down to two, and wanted to get your take.  Which design do you like more?  A or B?  We’ll be tallying your thoughts to figure out which one we go with, and should have them made in a couple weeks.

Killington Ski Resort is huge. Its seven peaks include the 4,241-foot Killington Peak, 141 trails, 22 lifts, 2 gondolas, five terrain parks, and a 430-foot SuperPipe. Add more than 3,000 feet of vertical, five on-mountain lodges, and 250 inches of average annual snowfall, and it is easy to see why Killington is called “the Beast of the East”. Killington is known for its classic Northeast-style narrow runs and wide-open groomers, but has plenty of moguls, steeps, and trees as well. Opened in 1958, and recently expanded by adding the separate Pico Mountain, it is the largest ski area on the East Coast and has the East’s longest run as well, the 6.2-mile Juggernaut.

28% of Killington’s terrain is easy, with 33% more difficult, and 39% most difficult. So whether you are looking to learn to ski, to speed down groomed cruisers, challenge yourself on some soft bumps, or get fresh tracks in some the East’s best powder, Killington is the place to be. Devil’s Fiddle on Bear Mountain is Killington’s classic bump run and while you are over there, check out the rest of the soft, forgiving bumps on Outer Limits.  When you are looking for powder, head straight up the K1 Express Gondola and go to the challenging Anarchy and Julio, a 40-degree face off Cascade Mountain. If it is all skied out, check out Devil’s Den, Centerpiece and Growler for some leftover powder. Intermediates can head right over to Ram’s Head with plenty of high-speed quads and Squeeze Play, the a safe, controlled area to learn to ski trees. If you are a novice, don’t worry; Killington’s big beginner area called Snowshed has plenty of room for you to learn.

Killington is also home to one of Burton Snowboard’s five “stash parks”. This one, called The Stash, is the only one of Burton’s namesake snowboarding terrain parks on the East Coast. Housed completely in the trees, the features are all natural and if you are a snowboarder, is not to be missed.

Killington’s infamous nightlife is centered around Killington Road, where you can get pizzas, beers, chicken wings, and a taste of some the classic après-ski scene. The best lodging is the condos and the Grand Hotel at the base. And as if you needed another reason to visit The Beast, Killington is one of the nation’s most environmentally conscious resorts. This year the resort will offset 100% of their electric use through renewable energy credits.

Located 68 miles west of Denver, A. Basin counted 425,00 skiers on its seven lifts last year and has over 2,200 vertical feet. It averages 350 inches of snow and has one of the longest ski seasons in the country. Thanks to a snowmaking system installed in 2002, A. Basin is open regularly from October until June. It was also the first resort in North America to open in both the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 seasons, tying with nearby Loveland in 2008/2009.

The early season, icy skiing and warm, spring turns may be some of A. Basin’s claim to fame but don’t be fooled, A. Basin is definitely a skier’s mountain. Gaining some huge momentum in 2008, the mountain’s acreage expanded by 80% with the addition of the legendary Montezuma Bowl. Montezuma is 400 acres on the backside that includes several groomers, chutes, cornices, glades, and wide open bowls. Accessed by the Zuma Lift, the addition provides more terrain to the already dynamic and Colorado favorite Arapahoe Basin. If Montezuma is already skied out, you can also look for some backcountry-accessed powder along the East Wall or some bumps off Pallavicini Lift.

Also, don’t miss out on the wild ruckus that is known as the Beach at A. Basin. The Beach is the front row of the early riser lot, prime real estate for powder mornings or warm spring days. There are nine spots for reservation, with room for picnic tables, a couple cars, tents, and often, a couple kegs. So whether it is some early season turns, some late season fun, or even waist deep powder you are looking for, Arapahoe Basin has it all, proof that good things definitely come is small packages.

They don’t call it Sun Valley for nothing. With the sun shining 80% of the time in this world-class Idaho resort and a snowfall of up to 350 inches, Sun Valley’s 2,054 skiable acres are not to be missed. Founded in 1935 by an Austrian Count looking for the ideal site for America’s first destination ski resort, Sun Valley’s fame and notoriety has continued to grow. In its early years it attracted the likes of Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and the Kennedys. Today it continues to attract Hollywood and ski royalty alike. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, and Tom Hanks are regulars, while ski legends and extreme skiers Reggie and Zach Crist and Olympian Picabo Street regularly grace the slopes alongside the locals.

Bald Mountain, also known as “Baldy”, has 13 lifts, 65 runs, and 3,400 feet of vertical to go with its more than 2000 acres. That means there is something for everyone. There’s plenty of mellow groomers on the River Run side and over on sunny Seattle Ridge. The steeps like Limelight, Holiday, Cozy, and Exhibition provide plenty of bumps and burning quads. On powder days, locals and those in the know repeatedly lap any of the six epic Bowls accessed by Mayday and Lookout Chairs. Later in the day be on the lookout for the afternoon sun and leftover powder stashes of Frenchman’s or College South Slopes.

With three on-mountain restaurants and two grand lodges at the base of both River Run and Warms Springs, there are plenty of chances to relax and refuel. The après-ski scene isn’t so bad either. The classic ski town of Ketchum is rich in ski culture with plenty of bars, restaurants, and action to keep you busy off the slopes as well.

Located a two-hour drive from Boise, Sun Valley can be reached by car or air via Friedman Memorial airport, 12 miles south of town. There are plenty of choices for lodging ranging from the historical Sun Valley Lodge in the Sun Valley village to condos or hotels closer to the nightlife in downtown Ketchum. Ranked seventh in Ski Magazine’s reader survey this year, the home of the world’s very first ski lift, the location of Warren Miller’s first ski movies, the headquarters for Smith Sport Optics and the birthplace of Powder Magazine, Sun Valley is rich in ski culture. With its first gondola opening for the 09/10 season, and new, state of the art terrain parks in the works, America’s first destination resort does well to live up to its reputation.

Jay Peak Resort reports more snow than any other Eastern resort and has Vermont’s only aerial tram. This meteorological marvel can sometimes get close to 30 feet of powder, making it a skier and snowboarder’s favorite on the East Coast. Located a few miles from the Quebec border, and only four hours from Boston, this Vermont resort has over 50 miles of skiable terrain (385 acres on-piste, 100 plus acres off-piste), 2,153 feet of vertical, two peaks, and 76 trails, glades, and chutes. With its Northeast exposure, varied terrain, and long, scenic trails, Jay Peak leaves its skiers and riders feeling satisfied, happy, tired, and often, ready for a beer.

Jay Peak’s most scenic trail is Vermonter but if you are looking for more a challenge, head straight for River Quai and Green Beret. For beginners and those learning to ski glades, Moonwalk Woods is perfect. The most classic and thigh-burning cruiser on the hill is Can-Am Super Trail, 150 feet wide, 4,000 feet long and holding 1,800 feet of vertical in one run. On a powder day, jump on the Tram and ski straight to Andre’s Paradise and Beaver Pond Glade.

The resort has also always encouraged tree skiing, even before tree skiing became popular. Jay’s Woods Policy merely asks that you have advanced skills, ski with a partner and use common sense. So once you get tired of the chutes, bowls and powder that often host extreme skiing competitions, the powder stashes in the trees should definitely be next. Jay Peak also offers “The Zone”, 80 acres of mellow tree skiing, designated specifically for those first learning to ski the trees.

While there is not much nightlife around Jay Peak, there is a new base village with a new hotel on its way. In the meantime, the Hotel Jay, which offers tons of ski and stay packages, has prime location right at the base of the tram.
